Have some parachute pants chillin’ in a trunk under the bed? How about a Members Only jacket or animal-print jumpsuit?
On Sunday, July 12, such styles will be hip again during the McHenry County Historical Society’s 30th Annual Heritage Fair from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the museum grounds, 6422 Main St. in Union. As part of this year’s “We Love the ’80s” theme, visitors are encouraged to wear ’80s fashion.
A car show sponsored by Intren and FirstMerit Bank of Union will feature sports, classic and antique cars. It runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free show features trophies for the top 20 cars, as well as best of show and a “people’s choice” trophy awarded to the best “survivor” (unrestored) car. A DJ will be spinning "oldies." Vintage cars are being sought for the free Heritage Fair Car Show. For information call Tony at TJ's Klassics, 847-515-8110.
An old-fashioned cakewalk is planned for 1 p.m. The featured entertainment at this year’s Heritage Fair is The Clef Hangers Barbershop Quartet and Freddy Fredricks Magic Show with roving magicians throughout the day plus a special magic show on stage at 2 p.m.
At noon and 3 p.m. AWS certified quilt appraiser, artist, and teacher Sandy Schweitzer of Crystal Lake will demonstrate a quilt bed turning featuring Civil War quilts. Baked goods, book, antique clothing, garden plants and white elephant sales are on-going throughout the day. At 10 a.m. a live antique auction takes place out on the museum lawn with auctioneer Russ Davis, while inside you can enjoy free admission to the museum and its 1895 one-room school, 1843 log cabin and the new brewing exhibit titled “Bottles, Barrels & Brews: McHenry County on Tap.”
“The James” mobile museum will be open and food from local vendors –including kettle corn, hamburgers/hot dogs and lemon shake-ups – will be on sale. Admission is free. Residents of the village of Union will host garage sales throughout town.
Finally, gardeners can find great buys at the Garden Glitz, featuring plants donated by local gardeners which are ready for transplant. As you trim, thin, and transplant in your spring gardens, keep our upcoming garden sale in mind and consider planting a few in containers for our sale. They need not be fancy. Your patio or garden accessories also can be recycled by pickers who value their artistic merit.
